How long will it take?

Monday, 26 July 2010 3:15 PM

When gathering quotes, a lot of people ask, 'how long will my move take?' in hopes to get an idea of how much the move will end up costing. Ask any professional removal company and they will tell you about the golden rule of estimating the length of a move.

On average, two professional movers can load 10 cubic meters per hour, with excellent access. It takes half that time of offload.

What is excellent access classified as? A short, clear path from where the removal truck will park to the main entrance point into the house, wide doorframes and hallways, no stairs and furniture has been dismantled prior to the removalists arrival.

Imagine you are moving from an average 3-bedroom home with roughly 30 - 40 cubic meters of furniture. The access at both the moving-from and moving-to addresses is excellent. It will take an average of 3 - 4 hours to load, then half that time to offload (i.e. 1½ - 2 hours to offload). That's a total of 4½ - 6 hours. Keep in mind, this estimate timeframe does not include the distance time it takes to travel between the addresses, depot or call-out fee.

To ensure a fast and efficient move, Your Local Movers provide professionally trained removalists. We recruit and personally train all our own staff. With the aid of an experienced team leader and offsider, they will undergo 3 months intensive training before deemed qualified to lead a move. We ensure our team are experienced and will get you moved as quickly and as efficiently as possible. For these reasons, we do not hire subcontractors or back-packers.

Let's use our imaginations again. This time you have just landed a new job working in an office. You are likely to spend the first couple of weeks umm-ing and aah-ing and standing around asking questions as you tackle new foreign tasks. After a couple of months doing the same job over and over, you feel confident walking into the office every morning and know exactly what you need to do, when to do it and how to do it. Now imagine hiring a removal company with untrained staff or who hire subcontractors and back-packers. It would be quite frustrating watching time ticking away as they umm and aah about how and what to do. And you're paying for it!

Want to move faster for the same price?

By adding an additional mover to the job, it will speed your move by up to 2/3.  It generally costs around the same, if not cheaper.  Basically you get moved for the same total cost, just much, much faster.
