Since the release of “Straight Outta Compton” we thought we would do a little research and see if there is a suburb or area in Brisbane with the same name. Unfortunately there isn’t, however, there is a Compton Road and off the road is a Compton Park. Who would have known?
Compton Road is in the southside of Brisbane and starts in Underwood, goes through Stretton and ends in Sunnybank. The road is 7.9 km long and takes 13 minutes to drive, or if you are feeling adventurous takes 1 hour 19 minutes to walk.
Unfortunately we couldn’t find any famous rappers who are from this area. Though Darren Hayes (half of Savage Garden) did grow up in Slacks Creek, which is pretty close to Underwood where the road starts. We don’t imagine he will release a “Gangsta Rap” album anytime in the near future unfortunately. We also found that Violent Soho are from Mansfield, which is also pretty close to the road. Who knows, maybe they will end their rock career and move to rap? They are only new to the music scene…
Now, lets get back to the street itself! So Compton Park in Brisbane definitely doesn’t give off the same vibe as a park in Compton, Los Angeles does as the park is the home playing field for Local Metro Football Club and the Queensland Christian Soccer Association. The only stars this park is making is Soccer stars and we hope it stays this way! (photo below)
The road begins in Underwood the 33rd best suburb in brisbane according to Homely. Underwood is 18 kilometres south of Brisbane CBD and is actually part of the Local City Council. The median house price in Underwood is $500,250 and the median rent is $450 per week. The suburb is more popular for older couples and families.
Midway through the street after Bunnings you will find Stretton. Stretton is 17 kilometres south from the Brisbane Central Business District and actually named after George Stretton, who settled in the area in the 1800s. The median house price is higher than Underwood and is known as a more pretentious suburb in Brisbane with plenty of homes over $1M, the median rent is for Stretton is $575 per week. Stretton is also more popular for older couples and families.
At the conclusion of Compton Road you are in Sunnybank Hills. Sunnybank Hills is 15 kilometres from Brisbane’s CBD and is reportedly named after a village in Lancashire that was the birthplace of a local fruit farmer. As the area’s rich soil was ideal for fruit and vegetables, flowers and nursery products. The median house price is $608 000 and the median rent is $480 per week. Once again older couples and families and independent youth are more prominent in Sunnybank Hills.
We’re not sure if Compton Road compares to Compton, Los Angeles where NWA grew up but at least we can feel like it, if we were to live or work on the street!
