Comments Off on What does Oslo’s ban on cars mean for the moving industry?
Earlier this week it was announced that Oslo’s newly elected city council will ban cars from the cities centre by 2019. I immediately thought “Wow” how are people going to move apartments, offices or retail shops? Having no car access will make this very difficult, so I had to do a little more research to see if they had thought of this issues.
Around 1,000 people live in the cities centre and around 90,000 people work in this area. There are 11 shopping centres in the proposed car-free zone. There has been concerns from business owners in this area however some studies have found that banning cars could lead to more business.
Other european cities such as Milan, Dublin, Paris, Madrid and Brussels also have big plans to make areas in their cities to be car-free in the near future. Madrid have even started to give out free public transport tickets in exchange of leaving their cars at home.
So, what will happen if people want to move apartments or move into a new office building? Will they walk back and forth carrying their items, will you be able to get a permit to drive in these places or will there be in an increase in companies such as “Movebybike” in Sweden.
“Movebybike” have created trailers for bicycles which can carry up to 300kg / 3m3 per load. A one bedroom unit has at least 10m3 and a four bedroom unit can be up to 45m3. Moving larger homes and offices will take a few trips on a bike…
In Oslo’s press conference it was noted that cars will still be allowed in the outer parts of the city, where most people live. In addition, delivery vehicles will be allowed to do their job. They also noted that disabled commuters will be catered for and that it would undertake a process of consultation and study before implementing the car ban.
Australia has not stated any plans to follow Europe’s idea of car free zones. However, who knows what we will be driving in the future. Perhaps we will all be riding on hoverboards or just as The Jetsons and travelling through tunnels. We will just have to wait and see where the future takes us and if car free zones really are they way of the future…
