Comments Off on Why is Moving Psychologically Stressful?
Moving isn’t just about the moving day. Moving takes a lot of time to plan and includes a lot of extra steps including lots of organising, saying goodbye to friends and neighbours, settling into a new neighbourhood and if you are buying and selling at the same time it means double everything! You will have two different solicitors, two sets of paperwork and two different real estate agents.
Moving usually occurs at the same time as other changes in your life. Specific changes include having kids, getting married, entering a new relationship, getting divorced or even getting a new job. All of these events can also trigger stress.
When it is time to start packing your items, you are going through all of your items and it can bring back a lot of memories. Especially when you are looking through old photos and letters. Not all of these memories triggered by specific items will be good, these memories could trigger added stress or anxiety. Packing is a great time to let go of items from your past such as letters and photos which you longer want or need. Packing is the best time to declutter your home and get rid of furniture items you no longer use.
You will need to adjust to a whole new environment at your new home. The location of your pots and pans might not be in the same drawer as they were in your last kitchen. All of your valuables will have a new location which you will need to adjust to and familiarise yourself with. You no longer can turn your light switch off without even looking as you may not even know where it is yet.
Leaving behind your old neighbours can be hard, especially if you have got to know them very well. This can also come with fear as you may be worried about meeting your new neighbours. Thoughts which can come up could be “Will they be as nice as our last ones?” or “I hope they like us”.
On top of having new neighbours, you will have a new local grocery store, chemist, doctor, school and gym. All of these places come with new faces which you will not be familiar with.
It is said that stress is caused from a loss of security. You are leaving behind your home which is your “safe sanctuary” and going to a new home that you are not 100% familiar with. It can take some people a few months before they feel secure and comfortable in their new home.
Accepting the permanent change of your new home can be the most difficult part of the move on top of the stressful time on moving day.
